2008 FOM Midwest Regional Detroit,MI

Steve with a 4.86 Lake Erie smallmouth.

The 2008 Regional was held Sept. 17-20 in Detroit MI. We could fish the Detroit River, Lake St.Clair and Lake Erie. We had 2 practice days to find something that would work for us. On our first practice day we traveled to lake St Clair. We tried a few spots but the wind really limited our options. We spent the rest of the day on the Detroit River. We had limited action and really had nothing to go on. Day 2 of practice was less windy so we ventured out to Lake Erie. What a huge body of water and where to start? We picked a spot and Steve broke the ice with a nice smallie and I followed with another. Marked the spot and moved on. We looked at the maps and hit another hump and had another really nice smallie and 3 walleyes. We then went back to the lower end of the river to spend the rest of the day. On day 1 the weather cooperated for us to run out to Lake Erie. we got to the first spot and caught fish right away. We got a limit on our first spot then left to check the other spot. We culled a few times there and called it a day. We weighed in 19.49# on day one. Good enough for 8th place. Day 2 was still good enough to run out on the big lake. We hit our starting spot and got 1 but then it just shut down. We had a few more boats around than we had the day before. We ran to our other spot and found it slow as well. After trying another spot. We came back and Steve caught a dandy smallie. I quickly followed up with one of my own and proceeded to lose it at the boat. We decided to spend the rest of the day there. We had a few more chances but could not bring them to the boat. We only weighed 2 fish on day 2 for 7.80#. Our total for both days was 27.29# good enough for 19th place and a trip to the FOM Nationals on the Red River in Louisiana in March.
